Let’s Make 2016 the Year of Restraint

I was just writing about the virtues of restraint (loosely defined as not saying or doing everything one could say or do) and thinking that I ought to write a blog post about how 2016 should be the year of restraint in social media when this piece by Alan Jacobs came to my attention. Given that Alan has said just about everything I would have said – and probably better – I’ll not say much more, but direct readers to his piece. The only thing I’ll add is a link to my earlier brief post on one mechanism of degeneration in public discourse, which is related to a few of the points that Alan makes in his own post.

So let’s make 2016 the Year of Restraint and stop hyperventilating social media.
