Four brief, bulleted observations on one mechanism of degeneration in public discourse

  1. Alarmist catasrophizing can make equanimity seem like indifference.
  2. Alarmist catastrophizing can make people uncomfortable with their own composure, for fear of being perceived as indifferent.
  3. Many of the otherwise/usually composed abandon equanimity and join the chorus of alarmist catastrophizing, putting even greater pressure on others to join in.
  4. This has a degenerative effect on public discourse.
