Summer reading on teaching, writing, and higher education

Every summer, I make a point of adding to my reading list one book on teaching, one book on writing, and one book on the philosophy, history, or current state of higher education.

I know it’s not summer yet, but we’re close, and I’ve decided what those three books will be this time around. Here they are:

Teaching

The Elements of Teaching, James M. Banner and Harold C. Cannon (Yale University Press)

Writing

Writing Successful Academic Books, Anthony Haynes (Cambridge University Press)

Higher Education

Liberal Arts at the Brink, Victor E. Ferrall, Jr. (Harvard University Press)

Next year, I plan to crowd-source a list of the best books on all three topics. Fee free to send along early recommendations.
